Speaking Hope to the Hurting in Chile: TWR Press Release, CARY, NC, March 1, 2010– As the nation of Chile continues suffering from the aftermath of Saturday’s massive earthquake, international Christian media ministry TWR was also affected as its partner office there, Radio Trans Mundial (RTM), sustained severe damage. According to RTM-Chile National Director Sigisfredo Alvarado, “All of those involved in the [RTM] ministry here in Chile are physically well,” he writes in an e-mail from a communication center with electricity, “but the office ended up in a heap of rubble. Part of the roof fell in, and the furniture came tumbling down destroying other things in its path.” Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time the quake hit. The extent of the damage and what it may cost to repair are still being assessed. Alvarado indicates that the country continues experiencing aftershocks, as well as significant destruction. “In many places of the country there is no electricity, including Santiago, nor drinkable water nor gas,” he reveals. “The supermarkets are practically empty. There is no food. We have lost complete contact with the directors of the radio stations we work with because there is no telephone connection.”

Thanks to the commitment and sponsorship of TWR-Netherlands, the new Dutch TTB program began airing on GrootNieuws Radio in early January. The program is aired twice daily at 5:30am and 10:15pm, and it’s still available for online listening at ttb.org. We started receiving enthusiastic responses from listeners within the first week of radio broadcasting. One listener wrote: "I was raised with the Bible, but the program still had some news for me. If the idea of the program is to spread the gospel, I think it indeed gives a lot of information. Therefore it really is something for people who want to know more, for those who know about the Bible and want to deepen their knowledge. [It’s] great what you are doing! This is the most beautiful work one can do for one’s neighbor. May God bless you!" For many years we’ve prayed that TTB could have a ministry to the Netherlands. Please join us now in praying that God will richly bless this new outreach. And don’t forget to also pray for our producer, Cor Weeda, and all those working with him to get the program translated, recorded, and on the air.

In the January newsletter we requested prayer for the health of our Low German producer, Elmer Reimer, and his wife, Tina. Unfortunately, soon after that letter was sent out we received word that Tina fell and sustained a compression fracture in her lower back. She was hospitalized briefly and received physical therapy at a care facility. Please keep Tina and Elmer in your prayers.

Please pray for strong reception in Asia where many listeners live in remote and mountainous areas.

Pray for Stanislas Ganse, producer of our new Fongbe program, as he continues work on the initial translation and production of the series. Once it begins airing, the program will be invading a stronghold of voodoo and witchcraft in West Africa. Satan will not be pleased with what is about to take place, so Stanislas needs our prayers of protection and courage.
EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI PRAYER INFO
UPDATE (January 18, 2010): Via TWR, we received confirmation from our Creole producer, Storly Michel, that at least four staff members at Radio Lumiere in Port-au-Prince perished in the earthquake. Please pray for the surviving friends and family members of these dear brothers and sisters in Christ.
(January 12, 2010): Joe Fort, TTB's coordinator at TWR, spoke this morning to Storly Michel, TTB’s Creole producer. He said that he spoke to the staff of OMS International and Radio 4VEH at about 1:00 this morning. They are located in Cap-Haitien up on the north end of the island. The surrounding area felt the quake, but suffered very little physical damage. So Radio 4VEH is still operational and the staff is safe. There have been numerous attempts to contact Radio Lumiere in Port-au-Prince, but most phone and electrical services have been knocked out. So, we do not know for sure, but assume that Radio Lumiere is probably off the air. As of now there is no word about the well being of their staff members. OMS is sending a team down there this morning, but they have been warned to expect to see and hear about the loss of many lives and almost complete destruction. It appears that TWR’s offices in the Dominican Republic also felt the quake but did not suffer any damage. Please join us as we pray for this impoverished country, for its people, and for the ministry that we can provide during this time of tragedy. (Posted 1/13/20, 8:20am Pacific)

Joe Fort, our TWR coordinator, recently paid a visit to the home of our Navajo producer, Thomas Woods. Due to severe arthritis in his feet and hands, Thomas was unable to travel to the station where Joe was holding meetings. Immediately upon Joe’s arrival, Thomas wanted to impress upon him what a blessing it is to him personally to produce TTB in the Navajo language. He also shared some testimonies of people whose lives have been changed as a result of listening to the broadcast. He has asked that we pray for healing and relief from his arthritis symptoms, which keep him from being as active as he’d like in missions and church activities.

Elmer Reimer, our Low German producer, is now 87 years old and has about 8 months of production work left on the 5-year TTB series. He and his wife, Tina, have asked that we continue to pray for their health. Elmer also asks for prayer that “the Holy Spirit will always speak in and through” him as he finishes out the production. Thank God for these faithful servants! Elmer’s heart breaks for the Low German people around the world, but most of all for those living in Bolivia. Everything in their daily lives is dictated and controlled by the local bishop in each colony. When someone does respond to the gospel and accepts Christ, they are immediately excommunicated from the church and are not allowed to work or conduct trade within the colony. Please pray for believers there, that their courage and strength would come from the Lord. Also for those struggling to make a decision for Christ, that fear of worldly rejection will not hinder them from falling into the loving embrace of their Savior.

Praise that we’ve recently added four new online broadcasts: Croatian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish (Castilian)!

The Bible Society of Mali has expressed interest in helping Trans World Radio set up about 50 listening groups throughout Mali. They’ll be using the TTB Pulaar broadcast as their teaching source. The MP3 players have been ordered and the TWR team in the Ivory Coast will begin the process of converting the radio programs into an appropriate format for loading onto the devices. Please pray that the Lord will use this as yet another tool to take the whole Word to the Pulaar people!

Please remember in prayer all those around the world whose lives, homes, families, and livelihoods have been affected by natural disasters in the last several months. May they see the hand of God in all of these events and in their lives personally, and know that His desire is for each and every man and woman to know Him and accept His gift of salvation by grace.

A recent report from our Cambodian partners testifies that a large number of people are requesting and receiving copies of the TTB Khmer program on CD and using them to establish listening groups. The response has been abundant and enthusiastic. Praise God that He’s using this project to expand the TTB Khmer ministry beyond the broadcasts from the local FM stations!

We recently added yet another one of our international languages to the growing list of broadcasts offered for online listening at ttb.org. This newest addition is Amharic, which is spoken throughout north central Ethiopia. It’s the second most-spoken Semitic language in the world, after Arabic, as well as the official language of Ethiopia. Please pray that this new outlet will expose many Amharic speakers to the gospel of Christ.
-
Please pray for the safety of all those travelling in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe by all modes of transportation in order to meet with listeners, attend conferences, train fellow support staff, set up or speak to listening groups, and more.
-
Partnership with local churches is essential in helping listeners grow in their spiritual lives. Please remember to pray for the many new churches and listening groups started by listeners – especially for those in remote areas.

A missionary in Thailand has contacted us, offering to negotiate adding the Thai broadcast to two radio stations in the Sukhothai province. Join us in praying that our Lord would bless these efforts and use this opportunity to open new doors for teaching His Word in Thailand.

In late July we added Creole to our long list of languages that are aired online. (If you haven’t been to our website lately and “sampled” some of our international broadcasts, we encourage you to do so!) Please pray that this will broaden our Creole-speaking audience around the world and that many people would fall in love with God’s Word through the teaching they hear.

Praise God for the addition of a new language broadcast! Quiché is one of the Mayan languages spoken by the Kiché people living in the northern highlands of Guatemala. Around 1.9 million people – or about 8% of the population of Guatemala – speak Quiché. The new program began airing on three stations in August. Please pray fervently that our Lord will bless the airing of this new translation, that lives will be transformed by the teaching of His Word, and that listener response would be positive. Thank God for opening this door to reach more of His precious children!
